Similar to carotid artery disease, when the vertebral artery gets affected by atherosclerosis, it increases the risk of stroke.
The vertebral artery can get critically narrow which can in turn increase the risk of stroke.
Symptoms can include dizziness, double vision, slurring of speech depending on the severity of the disease. Sometimes patients can also present with coma or in a more serious condition.
Use of a stent to keep the narrowed portion of vertebral artery open. This is a treatment option for vertebral artery atherosclerosis and other conditions.
When there is an increased risk of stroke that cant be offset with medical management alone.
This procedure is performed angiographically. Radial artery or Femoral artery is punctured catheters are used to access the vertebral artery. A balloon can be used sometimes to expand the narrowed artery and a stent is deployed in the most narrowed segment.
